Ayn Rand’s Normative Ethics – The Virtuous Egoist
Ayn Rand is well known for advocating egoism, but the substance of that egoism’s instruction is rarely understood. Far from representing the rejection of morality, selfishness, in Rand’s view, actually demands the practice of a systematic code of ethics. This book explains the fundamental virtues that Rand considers vital for a person to achieve his objective well-being: rationality, honesty, independence, justice, integrity, productiveness, and pride. Tracing Rand’s account of the naturalistic ground of value and the harmony of human beings’ rational interests, Tara Smith examines what each of these virtues consists in, why it is a virtue, and what it demands of a person in practice. Along the way, she addresses the status of several conventional virtues within Rand’s theory, considering traits such as kindness, charity, generosity, temperance, courage, forgiveness, and humility. Ayn Rand’s Normative Ethics thus offers an in-depth exploration of several specific virtues and an illuminating integration of these with the broader theory of egoism.

Ayn Rand: Atlas Shrugged

With this acclaimed work and its immortal query, “Who is John Galt?”, Ayn Rand found the perfect artistic form to express her vision of existence. Atlas Shrugged made Rand not only one of the most popular novelists of the century, but one of its most influential thinkers.
Atlas Shrugged is the astounding story of a man who said that he would stop the motor of the world–and did. Tremendous in scope, breathtaking in its suspense, Atlas Shrugged stretches the boundaries further than any book you have ever read. It is a mystery, not about the murder of a man’s body, but about the murder–and rebirth–of man’s spirit.
* Atlas Shrugged is the “second most influential book for Americans today” after the Bible, according to a joint survey conducted by the Library of Congress and the Book of the Month Club

Ayn Rand: FountainHead

Amazon.com Review
The Fountainhead has become an enduring piece of literature, more popular now than when published in 1943. On the surface, it is a story of one man, Howard Roark, and his struggles as an architect in the face of a successful rival, Peter Keating, and a newspaper columnist, Ellsworth Toohey. But the book addresses a number of universal themes: the strength of the individual, the tug between good and evil, the threat of fascism. The confrontation of those themes, along with the amazing stroke of Rand’s writing, combine to give this book its enduring influence.
Review
Ayn Rand is a writer of great power. She has a subtle and ingenious mind and the capacity of writing brilliantly, beautifully, bitterly.

Ayn Rand:The Virtue of Selfishness

First Sentence:
Since I am to speak on the Objectivist Ethics, I shall begin by quoting its best representative-John Galt, in Atlas Shrugged: “Through centuries of scourges and disasters, brought about by your code of morality, you have cried that your code had been broken, that the scourges were punishment for breaking it, that men were too weak and too selfish to spill all the blood it required.

Ayn Rand – Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal

“One of the most revolutionary and powerful works on capitalism—and on politics—that has ever been published.” —Professor Leonard Peikoff, Barron’s magazine
The foundations of capitalism are being battered by a flood of altruism, which is the cause of the modern world’s collapse. This is the view of Ayn Rand, a view so radically opposed to prevailing attitudes that it constitutes a major philosophic revolution. In her series of essays, she presents her stand on the persecution of big business, the causes of war, the default of conservatism, and the evils of altruism.
Rand sets forth the fundamentals of her unique philosophy, known as objectivism, in this book, Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal, as well as in three other of her works.
This collection of twenty-six essays includes twenty by Ayn Rand as well as three essays by Alan Greenspan, two by Nathaniel Branden, and one by Robert Hessen. They constitute a challenging look at modern society by some of America’s most provocative intellectuals.

Ayn Rand – Anthem

The back cover page of Rand’s timeless classic reads “He lived in the dark ages of the future. In a loveless world he dared to love the woman of his choice. In an age that had lost all trace of science and civilization he had the courage to seek and find knowledge. But these were not crimes for which he would be hunted. He was marked for death because he had committed the unpardonable sin: he had stood forth from the mindless human herd. He was a man alone.”
If ever there was a book that offers a stunning glimpse into the ‘groupthink’ mentally, Anthem is it. Set in the future, where somehow people have no knowledge electricity and other basics that we’ve gotten used to, the main character, Equality 7-2521 (yes, make the connection between his name and Adolf Hitler, you can do it), is nothing like his brothers–this is a bad thing. He thinks too much, asks too many questions, and eventually, begins to see that the world is different from what he has been conditioned to think.
At only 107pages, its also a quick read. Part of the dystopia genre (where the future is controlled down to what you think, and your freedom to do almost anything is impeded by ‘big brother’), I simply love this power-packed rebellious novel!
